We bring you yet another review of a storage device that most of the computer users and now smartphone or tablets users carry with them. We have reviewed the Kingston DataTraveler R3.0 USB pen drive or flash drive. There are a number of features where this storage media leave a very impressive mark. So, let us tell you what features we have been impressed with while using Kingston DataTraveler R3.0 or DT R3.0.
Design
Kingston DT R3.0 has an amazing design, it has a rubber body that makes this flash drive very rugged, so it can take many more bumps than the conventional flash drives. The cap is made of 100% rubber that fits perfectly over the USB connector. It also fits nicely on the back of the flash drive, so you won’t have to worry misplacing its cap while using it.
A slight disappointment in DR R3.0 is its large body. While many companies and even Kingston is making small USB flash drives DT R3.0 has quite a large body compared to other flash drives. The drive has an LED indicator which shines pink while it is not being used, and lits in blue color while active with any device.
Specifications
Kingston DataTraveler R3.0 supports USB 3.0 with speeds up to 70MB/s Read and 30MB/s Write. It is also backward compatible with USB 2.0 with speeds 30MB/s Read and 25MB/s Write. DT R3.0 comes in 16, 32 and 64GB variants. The flash drive supports FAT32, NTFS and exFAT file systems. Overall usable space in DT R3.0 is 29.2GB, the rest of the space is used for formatting and other functions.
Performance
We tested Kingston DT R3.0 32GB for speeds by transferring files from computer and the flash drive and vice versa. While transferring large files like videos with size around 700MB, the flash drive reached a maximum of 74.9MB/s Read and 41.5MB/s while connected with USB 3.0 port. These speeds are higher that what is claimed by Kingston as per specs. On USB 2.0, the flash drive reached a maximum of 31.5MB/s Read and 25.9MB/s Write.
We also transferred large volume of small files, which were unprocessed images and their digital negatives from Canon DSLR camera. These files weighed around 1.39GB. While transferring these files, we witnessed maximum speeds of 71.1MB/s Read and 23.1MB/s Write on USB 3.0, while on USB 2.0 reached maximum speeds reached 29.7MB/s Read and 17.3 Write.
Similar to most of the flash drives in the market, DT R3.0 takes a lot of time if a user transfers a large volume of very small size files, in KBs. The write speeds during such transfer will come out to be around or less than 1MB/s.
The drive can also be used with USB OTG supported smartphones and tablets. We transferred large HD videos to the flash drive and played them in Galaxy Note 3.0 tablet, where the videos played flawlessly without any lags.
Verdict
Kingston DataTraveler R3.0 is a great storage media for those who transfers large files, like videos or images. It has a rugged design so you won’t have to worry about it being damaged physically. Transfers speeds with USB 3.0 are lightning, so we’d recommend this flash drives to those who are looking for one with high transfer rates.
