HTC has yesterday announced two of their new devices, including a smartphone under their Desire lineup and a new breakthrough technology gadget dubbed as HTC RE. The new HTC RE is something we never been saw before, it is a standalone camera that is small in size and captures photos and videos holding it with ease in hands.

HTC RE has a unique design that gives a comfortable hold in your hand, the design seems to be inspired from that of a Periscope used in Submarines to see outside. The design of HTC RE resembles the part of a Periscope that remains outside the Submarine. Although, RE offers the same functionality of the GoPro cameras but differs in the way we can use it.

The concept is certainly innovative, as it will be very easy to capture photos and videos by comfortably holding the device in hand while the camera is clicking. And with that kind of hold, you can point the device anywhere to capture a moment. You can capture a selfie, you can capture yourself driving a car/bicycle and can even capture what is going on behind your back.

HTC RE is not like a smartphone where you will have to take it out, launch the camera and take a shot looking at the Live View. With HTC RE you will only have to grip it in your hand and the device comes to power. RE incorporates a grip sensor within that brings the device to power as soon as it is gripped in hand. With RE, you will be witnessing the actual moment while RE will be capturing it, you won’t be missing the moment looking at any viewfinder.

HTC RE has a single shutter button on it placed well on the curve at the back, single-tap clicks a photo while a double-tap starts recording video. The camera also supports slow-motion and time-lapse modes of shooting. There is a slow-motion toggle button at the bottom of the camera. Another great thing about HTC RE is that you can take it anywhere you want as it comes with IPX7 rating making the device water-proof.

RE features a high-resolution 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, supporting Full HD (1080p) videos at 30 fps and 146-degree wide-angle. The device is equipped with a 820 mAh battery that is claimed to be enough to capture 1200 photos or 1 hour 40 minutes of Full HD video recording. The device also comes with 32GB built-in storage, microSD supported and has 256MB RAM.

RE will be accompanied by the RE app for iOS and Android devices. The RE app will work as a remote and a viewfinder for the device. Imagine how great it would be to place RE nearby and click a perfect group selfie by viewing the frame live in the app. HTC RE connects with your smartphone via Bluetooth and WiFi-Direct, or can also be connected via microUSB.

In our opinion, HTC RE is indeed a good digital camera that can also be regarded to be an accessory to work as an extension to your smartphone. It has an unusual and unfamiliar design that will be considered awkward by many who will look at it for the first time. Users will have to invest quite some time to get acquainted with it before they can actually make use of it.

HTC RE has been priced for a hefty $199 and is expected to be available in the stateside in November, followed by other global markets. It is now available for pre-orders in the US for $199 from recamera.com/us.
